Housing Benefit or Universal Credit housing costs?
The name people search is often not the benefit they need to claim. Use your age and housing situation to find the likely route before filling in the wrong form.
The three quick rules
Most working-age renters
Universal Credit
Private and social renters usually add housing costs to a Universal Credit claim or account.
Pension age or special housing
Housing Benefit
It remains for pension-age claims and qualifying supported, refuge and council-arranged temporary accommodation.
Homeowners
SMI loan
Support for Mortgage Interest may help with eligible interest after the qualifying period. It is repayable.
Why the July 2026 date matters
DWP closed ordinary working-age Housing Benefit from 1 July 2026. Limited exceptions remain, including people in qualifying temporary or specified accommodation and several transition cases. That means an old answer saying a working-age private or social renter can simply stay on Housing Benefit may now be wrong.
If a migration letter, final Housing Benefit decision or Universal Credit housing line does not match what you expected, do not make a second claim blindly. Compare the dates and ask the council or DWP which award is live. A new Universal Credit claim can end legacy benefits and usually cannot be undone.
How much rent support will cover
The route is only the first question. For private rent, help is normally capped by the Local Housing Allowance for the area and bedroom entitlement. For social rent, eligible rent and service charges are considered, but spare-room rules can reduce the amount. Neither route guarantees the full contractual rent.
Read the plain-English Housing Benefit and UC housing guide, then check the Local Housing Allowance guide. If the benefit cap is creating the shortfall, use the benefit cap checker too.

Common questions
Can I still make a new Housing Benefit claim in 2026?+
Usually only if you have reached State Pension age, live in council-arranged temporary accommodation, or live in qualifying supported, sheltered or refuge accommodation. Most other working-age renters use Universal Credit housing costs.
What changed for working-age Housing Benefit on 1 July 2026?+
DWP closed the remaining ordinary working-age Housing Benefit cases from 1 July 2026, with limited exceptions. Housing Benefit remains available for qualifying temporary and specified accommodation, while most private and social renters use Universal Credit.
Will Universal Credit pay all of my private rent?+
Not necessarily. For a private renter, the housing amount is normally the lower of the actual eligible rent or the relevant Local Housing Allowance rate. Income, savings, the benefit cap and other deductions can also affect the final Universal Credit payment.
Can homeowners get the Universal Credit housing amount?+
It does not normally pay a mortgage. An eligible homeowner may instead be offered Support for Mortgage Interest, which is a loan towards eligible interest and must normally be repaid with interest when the home is sold or transferred.
